Periodontology is the specialty of dentistry that studies the supporting structures of teeth, as well as diseases and conditions that affect them. Periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent oral diseases, but at the same time, it is also preventable. The cornerstone of prevention and management of periodontal disease is good oral hygiene, with a crucial role for home based oral care. Although this sounds straightforward, patients with periodontal disease have unique demands, and there are many challenges. Patient motivation and compliance, anatomical anomalies, systemic health issues, genetics, etc. How do specialists in periodontology deal with such challenges? What type of solutions do they have at their disposal, and what are their strategies in daily practice? Dr. Dagmar Else Slot is a dental hygienist, educational expert, and clinical epidemiologist. She is a full Professor of Oral Prevention at the Department of Periodontology, Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). Internationally she is known for lectures at conferences and a strong research portfolio as a co-author of more than 125 peer-reviewed publications. For her scientific oeuvre, she received various prizes and she is a well know dental hygienist.

Dr. Filippo Graziani is a full professor in Periodontology at the University of Pisa where he coordinates the sub-unit in Periodontology, Halitosis and Periodontal Medicine. He is former President of the European Federation of Periodontology and Visiting Professor in Periodontology at the Eastman Dental Institute - University College of London, in London, UK. He is an Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Dentistry, Hong Kong SAR, China.
